Strata Walks - a series (2023 - )

I see walking as a multi-sensory experience consisting of layers of visual information, forms, textures and sounds, all of which occurs simultaneously. Walks are sometimes documented through photography, sound recordings and writing. These methods help to unpick my experiences and provides a reflective richness to my making process back in the studio.

In this body of work, I approach clay as a collaging material with each component reflecting an individual element of my walk and the site I move through. I make quickly, combining different clay bodies, hand building techniques and mark making approaches. I welcome the uncertainty of using raw glaze as a building agent and the tension of building in such a bricolage manner.

Presenting my walks as a strata of ceramic material, I aim to explore how the systems of an environment, its rhythms and juxtapositions of material can alter our perception of place.
